Why the backend is half the budget
People price apps by imagining screens, because screens are what they have seen. But if the app has accounts, stores data, sends notifications, takes payment or syncs between devices, there is server-side software behind it that has to be designed, built, secured and maintained. That work is invisible in a mockup and is frequently larger than everything visible.

What actually moves the number
- Backend and infrastructure. Frequently the largest single factor, and the most commonly omitted.
- Native or cross-platform. React Native or Flutter is roughly one build instead of two, and suits the large majority of business apps. Separate native builds are justified by heavy device access, demanding graphics or serious media playback.
- Integrations. Payments, identity, a CRM, an ERP. Each is a project with its own failure modes, and the engineering that matters is what happens when the other side is slow or down.
- Offline behaviour. If the app must work without a connection, sync and conflict handling is real engineering rather than a setting.
- Regulated data. Health or financial information shapes the architecture from day one. Retrofitting it costs several times more than designing for it.
- Design depth. A template pattern library against a bespoke design system is a genuine cost difference and a genuine quality difference.
The cost nobody quotes for

This is not optional in the way it is for a website. An unmaintained website looks dated. Where offshore rates fit
Rates vary enormously by market: roughly $100 to $200 an hour in the US, $50 to $100 in Western Europe, and $20 to $50 in India and Eastern Europe. That is real, and it is why a great deal of app development happens where it does.
What it does not change is scope. A cheaper hourly rate applied to an underspecified brief still produces an overrun, just a smaller one.
