Page builders make the first version fast and every version after it slow. They ship heavy CSS and JavaScript on every page and lock your content into their shortcodes, so leaving means rebuilding. We build custom block themes so the markup stays clean and the content stays portable.
Every plugin is code from a stranger with database access. Sites we inherit routinely run thirty of them, most doing something a few lines of theme code would handle. We keep the count low and write the rest ourselves.
WordPress is not inherently slow, it is usually made slow. Proper caching, a CDN, images in modern formats, deferred scripts and a theme not loading four font families. We agree Core Web Vitals thresholds before the build and hold to them.
Almost every compromised WordPress site we are asked to clean up was running an outdated plugin on a site nobody was updating. Staged updates, backups you can actually restore from, and monitoring. A security plugin is not a substitute for maintenance.
The block editor is genuinely good when the blocks are designed for your content. We build patterns for your real page types, so publishing means filling in fields rather than assembling a layout and hoping it matches.
Cheap shared hosting with an 800 millisecond response time cannot be rescued by front-end optimisation. We will tell you when hosting is the actual constraint rather than selling you work that will not fix it.

The exclusions question is the one most people forget, and it is the one that decides whether the final invoice matches the quote.
If the core of what you are building is logic, permissions and data rather than pages and content, you are fighting the platform. That is custom development.
WordPress rewards ownership and punishes neglect. If nobody on your side will apply updates and nobody is paying for maintenance, a hosted platform is the more honest choice.
A small site with no publishing needs may not need a CMS at all. Static pages load faster, cost less and cannot be compromised through a plugin.
For content-heavy sites where you want to own everything and publish often, yes. It has the deepest plugin ecosystem of any platform and no vendor can change your pricing or terms. The criticism it attracts is aimed at badly built WordPress, which is common because the barrier to entry cuts both ways.
We advise against it for anything you intend to keep. Builders ship heavy assets on every page and store content wrapped in their shortcodes, so moving away means rebuilding. A custom block theme takes longer to build and is far cheaper to live with.
There is no magic number, but past fifteen it is worth an audit and past thirty something has gone wrong. What matters is what each does and who maintains it. One well-supported plugin doing real work beats five abandoned ones doing very little.
