Polished with almost no maintenance
Nothing to update, nothing to patch, hosting included. For a business with nobody to maintain a site, that is a genuine advantage and the main reason to choose it.
Squarespace produces a polished site with almost no maintenance. For an Indian business the trade-offs are different from how it is usually pitched.
Squarespace suits small businesses wanting a polished site with no maintenance burden. For Indian businesses two constraints matter more than the usual pitch admits: billing is in dollars monthly, and payment gateway support for Indian methods is limited, which makes it a poor fit for selling domestically.

Plans are priced in USD and the annual rupee cost is meaningfully higher than local hosting with WordPress. Worth calculating for three years before committing rather than comparing monthly figures.
Squarespace commerce supports a narrow set of gateways, and Indian methods including UPI are poorly served. For selling domestically this is usually disqualifying, and Shopify or WooCommerce is the better answer.
Some arrangements are not reachable even with custom CSS, because the template controls them. We will tell you during design if what you want is one of those rather than discovering it late.
Changing the fundamental layout means rebuilding pages. Version 7.1 reduced this by unifying styling, and it has not removed it.
Titles, descriptions, URLs, redirects and alt text are all controllable and the markup is clean. It will not hold a normal business site back.
| Squarespace | WordPress | |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | USD subscription | Cheap Indian hosting |
| Maintenance | None | Yours |
| Indian payment gateways | Poorly supported | Full choice |
| Layout flexibility | Bounded by template | Effectively unlimited |
| Who it suits | Nobody to maintain a site | Someone who will |
For a brochure site with no domestic selling, Squarespace is a reasonable trade. For anything taking payments in India, it usually is not.
| Ask them | Good answer | Walk away if |
|---|---|---|
| Who owns the site and accounts? | You do, in your own name | Accounts in the agency's name |
| Can I open three live examples? | URLs you can check yourself | Screenshots and a PDF |
| What is explicitly not included? | A written list with change pricing | Everything is included |
| How will we know it worked? | A metric agreed before work starts | Activity reports |
The exclusions question decides whether the final invoice matches the quote.
For a brochure site with nobody to maintain it, yes. The dollar subscription is a real consideration the usual pitch skips, and if you need to take payments from Indian customers the gateway limitations are usually disqualifying.
Technically yes, and the supported payment gateways do not serve Indian methods well, particularly UPI. For domestic selling, Shopify or WooCommerce is a considerably better fit.
It is fine. You control titles, descriptions, URLs, redirects and alt text, and the markup is clean. It will not hold a normal business site back, and it will not do the work for you either.
Not without rebuilding your pages. Version 7.1 unified styling across templates which reduced the problem, and changing the fundamental layout still means reworking content.
Calculate the USD plan at current exchange rates over three years and compare it against WordPress on Indian hosting plus maintenance. The comparison usually surprises people who were comparing monthly figures.
Squarespace if you want zero maintenance and are not selling domestically. WordPress if you publish often, need Indian payment gateways, or want cheap local hosting and full ownership.
